How notes are stored
- A sticky note is typically a /Text annotation with an associated /Popup for its open state. Notes are objects in the page's /Annots array, not part of the content stream.
- Because they are separate objects, they can be listed, exported, edited and deleted independently of the text they refer to.
Adding notes
- Open the PDF in an editor and place a note at the relevant position. Notes anchor to a point on the page and can be resized or collapsed.
- For review workflows, keep notes factual and actionable — they often become the change record.
Removing notes before sharing
- Review notes are the single most common accidental leak: they contain candid assessments never intended for the recipient.
- Delete notes across all pages in one pass, then verify by copying the text out — note content sometimes persists in unexpected places.
Notes versus flattened text
- If a note was exported or printed into the page, it is no longer an annotation and cannot be removed as one. It needs image-level or direct editing.
