Why comments are the highest-risk layer
- Comments are candid by design. Unlike the document body, they are not written for an external audience.
- They are also easy to overlook visually: collapsed notes are invisible until clicked, so a file can look clean while carrying dozens of them.
What gets removed
- Sticky notes (/Text), popups (/Popup), review replies, and text-markup annotations such as highlights and strikethroughs that carry comment text.
What can survive
- Comments flattened into page content by export or printing.
- Author and timestamp references held in metadata — clear metadata separately.
- Comment text pasted into the document body itself.
Verify properly
- Do not rely on looking at the page. Copy the whole text out and skim it — surviving comment text surfaces immediately.
- Open the file in a second viewer; rendering differences expose residual objects.
Caution: Collapsed comments are invisible on screen. A file can look clean and still carry dozens — always verify by extracting the text, not by looking.
