"AI" is attached to a lot of PDF tools. For handwriting removal it does two things well — finding strokes automatically and reconstructing the background behind them — and it does not magic away information that is not in the file.

What AI actually does here
- Stroke detection: instead of you outlining every pen mark, a model segments handwriting from the page, which matters a lot on multi-page scans.
- Background reconstruction: the model infers what was underneath the stroke — effective on uniform backgrounds (blank paper, light ruling), unreliable on textured or text-dense areas.
Where it helps most
- Bulk scanned forms where marks sit in predictable regions.
- Light pencil or thin-pen annotations over plain paper.
- Documents where manual outlining would take longer than the job is worth.
Where it struggles
- Marks overlapping printed text — the model cannot know what it covered.
- Heavy ink with bleed-through to the reverse side.
- Low-resolution scans: there is not enough signal to reconstruct plausibly.
Judging a result
- Inspect at 100% zoom, not fit-to-page — artefacts hide at small scales.
- Compare against the original in a viewer that lets you toggle between them.
- If the erased area looks "too clean" relative to the paper texture nearby, it probably is.
Caution: AI reconstruction produces a plausible guess, not a recovery of original pixels. Do not rely on it for documents where exact fidelity matters.

- For ink annotations, yes — exactly, because they are removable objects. For scanned pen marks, AI can detect strokes and reconstruct backgrounds convincingly on plain paper, but it is inferring, not recovering.
- Is AI better than manual erasing?
- Mainly for speed and coverage on multi-page documents. For a single critical mark, careful manual work usually looks better.
- Why does the result look blurry?
- The model fills the region with inferred content. Where the original texture was detailed, the reconstruction cannot match it.
- Does it work over printed text?
- Poorly. Nothing in the file indicates what the handwriting covered, so output there is guesswork.
- Are detected regions always correct?
- No. Review detections before erasing — false positives can remove content you wanted to keep.
- Does higher scan resolution help?
- Yes, significantly. More source detail gives the model more to work with.
- Is it safe for confidential documents?
- Only if processing is browser-local. Confirm where the computation happens before uploading.
- Should I use it on legal documents?
