- A highlight is an annotation object drawn over existing text. Deleting it removes the coloured overlay; the underlying text was never modified.
- The same applies to /Underline, /Squiggly and /StrikeOut — all are markup annotations layered on the content.
What to watch for
- Highlights can carry comments. Deleting the highlight usually removes its popup, but confirm the comment text is gone too.
- In documents exported from word processors, "highlighting" may be part of the text run itself rather than an annotation — in that case it survives annotation removal and needs editing in the source application.
