Remove Markups from PDF
"Markup" covers two families: text markup (highlights, underlines, strikethroughs) drawn over text, and drawing markups (ink, shapes, lines) drawn anywhere on the page. Both are annotation objects and both come off cleanly.

Text markup annotations
- /Highlight, /Underline, /Squiggly and /StrikeOut. These overlay existing text; removing them leaves the text exactly as it was.
- Note that strikethroughs exported from a word processor may be text formatting rather than annotations — those survive removal and must be edited at source.
Drawing markup annotations
- /Ink (freehand), /Square, /Circle, /Line, /Polygon and /PolyLine. These are objects drawn on the page and are removed like any other annotation.
Order of work
- Remove annotations first — they are discrete and the operation is exact.
- Then handle anything flattened: watermarks, baked-in marks, or scanned annotations, which need image-level treatment.
- Clear metadata last, since it does not affect layout.
Confirming the result
- Page through the document at full zoom — faint ink and thin lines are easy to miss at fit-to-page.
- Extract the text and skim it for markup artefacts.
Caution: Some strikethroughs and highlights are text formatting rather than annotations. If a mark survives removal, edit it in the source application.
