Approval stamps — "Approved", "Confidential", "Draft" — are /Stamp annotations drawn over the page. In most cases they lift off cleanly. The exceptions are worth knowing before you promise a colleague it will take a minute.

How stamps are stored
- A digital stamp is a /Stamp annotation: an object in the page's /Annots array with an appearance stream that defines how it looks.
- Because it is a separate object, deleting it removes the stamp without touching the page content.
When stamps survive
- The document was scanned after stamping — the stamp is now part of the page image.
- The file was printed to PDF or exported, flattening the stamp into the content stream.
- A "stamp" is actually a watermark or background image placed in the page content rather than as an annotation.
Physical versus digital stamps
- A physical ink stamp on paper, then scanned, behaves like handwriting on a scan: pixel-level, requiring erasing, and often leaving traces.
- A digital stamp applied in a PDF tool is an object and removes exactly.
Verify
- After removal, page through at full zoom — stamps in margins or rotated are easy to miss.
- If a stamp persists, it is flattened: use image-level removal or obtain the pre-stamp document.
Caution: Stamps on scanned documents are pixels, not objects. Erasing them reconstructs the background and may leave visible traces.
